Sailing with humpback whales!
How wonderful to experience the joy of observing marine life in the wild while sailing! Yesterday was one of those days in which one could not help but sit back and simply enjoy the magic as it played around us. With light SE winds blowing a warm breeze our way, we were able to 'sail with the humpback whales' in Blackfish Sound; there were three of them working the area in wide circles making their way west in back eddies and east in the flooding current. It was fabulous to watch as one surfaced and then another in the opposite direction and then a third nearby, time and again. The entire tour was brilliant, beautiful and exciting, with glorious scenic viewing, the cloud formations passing through were breathtaking and the bald eagles soaring high, it was fantastic! On our way home we passed a fourth humpback whale, it reappeared far behind us as we left the area. Also seen were: harbour seals, dall's porpoises, rhinoceros auklets, common murres, cassin's auklets, bald eagles, belted kingfishers and gull species. A penned comment from yesterday's tour: The whale watching was just the beginning! Humpbacks and then dall's porpoises speeding nearby. But it was the thrill of watching on a big sailboat that brought it all alive for us. The wind, the sun and the freedom! On the way back it was islands and eagles. And what about those homemade scones! A wonderful trip. Cliff & Monica ~ Port Coquitlam, BC
