Resident Orcas foraging with superb A & G-Clan vocals!
Today's Sightings: Resident Orcas, Humpback Whales, Dall's Porpoises, Pacific White-sided Dolphins, Harbour Seals, Steller Sea Lions, Rhinoceros and Cassin's Auklets, Red-Necked Phalaropes, Common Murres, Marbled Murrelets, Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfishers, Sooty Shearwaters and Gulls.
Resident Orcas had been reported travelling east near the east end boundary of the Robson Bight (Michael Bigg) Ecological Reserve when we left the dock this morning and despite the rain, our viewing of them was very exciting because many orcas were seen!
When we encountered them they were all spread out and fishing, they were the A30's and the I115's! As they foraged we listened intrigued to their echolocations and A & G-Clan vocalizations via our hydrophone. While the rain continued, the orcas were extremely vocal making our viewing of them even more surreal and superb!
We observed six Humpback Whales, some at a distance. Nic and Stripe were near Cracroft Point and Freckles in Weynton Passage. Our viewing of Steller Sea Lions on our way home added even more to the mix of colour and contrast of species that we saw today!
