Cetaceans galore on the first day of summer!
It was a day of the Cetacea throughout our tour this afternoon. Not only did we see Dall's porpoise which frequent this area, we also saw a lone Harbour porpoise and numerous Pacific White-sided Dolphins. The dolphins were milling about seeming as though they were having to look hard for their food. That indeed was the wildlife behaviour of the day. The two Humpbacks we saw swam in large circles, taking long deep dives as they searched for their prey, in this case, a school of Herring. Even the Harbour seals were out in open water, laying just at the surface with their head poised half in the sea waiting for a snack to pass on by. Squiggles was one of the Humpback whales we identified, thanks to the erect fluke which allowed us to see the unique design on the under the surface of the tail. We made the most of our calm seas and meandered through narrow channels where the intertidal zone displayed an abundance of seaweed, the odd sea star and Plumose Anemones which could be seen meters down into the clear emerald green sea.
