Wind, waves and wonderful Humpback whales!
Sunshine, wind, strong currents and numerous Humpback Whales made for an exhilarating day on the water. We had two groups of adventurous guests who enjoyed their tours and appreciated just how dynamic and diverse this Northern Vancouver Island area is.
At least six Humpback whales were seen giving guests the opportunity to capture the broad and powerful fluke of the whales as they arched their bodies and dove deep. One whale breached which was seen at a distance, reminding us how acrobatic these gentle giants can be, especially in windy conditions!
Today we saw again the large male Steller Sea lion who has adopted a large rock on one of the Plumper Islands as his place of rest for a time. Since the tide was low, he sat high upon a rock, giving us the impression that he was king of a mountain.
It was fascinating to watch the smallest bird we see out here, the Red-necked Phalaropes navigated the strong northwesterly wind by flying close to the ocean surface in their abundant flocks. How agile and swift they are.
For most of the day, the sky was a generous blue and the sun kept us cosy and warm while the vigorous northwesterly wind blew hard upon those of us on the sea and the land as well! We all enjoyed a thrilling and fun-filled day on the water.
