So Much Sea Life in One Place!
The MV Seasmoke went out on two tours today under a mix of sun and cloud, with a northwest wind blowing. Afternoon guests were very happy to have seen Humpbacks, Orca and Dall’s porpoise, as well as Stellar sea lions, all within a few hours’ tour. Our skipper circled Hanson Island and found Humpbacks near Orcalab, making their shallow dives and foraging for small fish and krill. The Northern Resident Orca, I27s and I65s were spotted near Cracroft Point, busy fishing for salmon.
He caught a nice photo of a Bald eagle in flight. In recent days eagles have been seen in large numbers - up to about 23 just on one trip. Our region is a favourite nesting area, and it is delightful to be able to see their huge nests high up in trees in the Stephanson and Plumper Islands. Small seabirds gathered over a bait ball, filled with tiny fish - delicacy!
Harbour seals were also in the Stephansons, looking comfortably but alertly at the boats passing by. Such a beautiful place to be, where such a variety of sea life is right at our doorstep!
