'A Memorable Experience' say our guests
The MV Seasmoke departed Alert Bay and Alder Bay under overcast skies, and lovely, flat calm waters. Guests on this mid-morning tour saw so much wildlife, many were absolutely overwhelmed and amazed.
The lively little Dall’s porpoise came to play with the boat for about ten minutes - 15 - 20 of them! So much fun to watch these small ‘black and whites’ skimming alongside, going under the boat, playing in the bow waves… such a joyous experience! Other larger ‘black and whites’ spotted were our Northern Resident Orca identified as the A42 at Weynton Island and heading west from Cracroft Point. Lots of neat communication coming from them.
In Weynton Passage, there were five Humpback observed lunge feeding in the bait balls of tiny fish that were all over the place and first time whale watchers were thrilled to find out that these Humpback visit our local waters for months at a time. Waterfowl were clearly also interested in these bait balls and the Pigeon Guillemot, Red Necked Phalarope, Rhinoceros Auklet and Common Murre were seen throughout. And Bald eagles were again at their nest in the Stephanson Islands. Also in the Stephansons, the orange-beaked Oyster Catcher was seen, and spotted Harbour seals lounged on rocky islets. Stellar sea lions are back in full force with at least one hundred of them resting and feeding near the eagle’s nest at Sea Lion Rock.
A Minke whale made a brief appearance just outside Alder Bay Resort as our skipper and passengers were heading back to Alert Bay, making this another trifecta day! Guests were delighted with all the wildlife they saw and the education they received from our skipper about the life and habits of all these amazing creatures that live on our coast.
